Homework is an important part of being a first grader. It teaches students how to be responsible for their learning at home, reinforces concepts learned in class, and prepares students for older grades.
Homework will be sent home every Friday and will be due back on the following Friday. In the homework packet you will usually see 3-4 math pages, a writing assignment, an enrichment page, handwriting practice, and the 'No Excuse Words' for the week. Students are also required to read 20 minutes each night. This can be done in a number of ways. Students can read independently, students can read aloud to an adult, an adult can read to the student, or a combination of these strategies can be done. Make sure to discuss the text to make sure that your child understands what has been read.
Please sign the homework cover sheet before your student hands it in. This is your way of telling me that your child completed the homework, read 20 minutes every night, and that you checked it. First grade homework is not designed to be done alone. Parents should play an active role in helping their child with weekly homework.
