No Excuse Words

Many of you may be wondering why I call these 'No Excuse Words'.  It's really quite simple.  Since these are the most frequently used words in the English language and they are on our classroom word wall, there is no excuse not to know them.  In every weekly homework packet there is a sheet of ten words plus 5 bonus words.  Every student should cut out these words every week and practice reading and spelling them.  Students should be prepared to read these words to and spell them every Friday.  I have provided every child with an envelope to keep these words in.  It is a good idea to go back and review the old words frequently.  If you need another copy of these words, click on the links below.

Knowing these words is important.  As students practice these words, they will start to be aware of them in their reading.  If they do not have to take the time to sound out these frequently used words, they will read with more fluency and less interruption.  This will help them develop as a reader.  My hope is that with the help of the word wall, students will also start to use these words correctly in their writing as well.
